Group Therapy
Whereas individual therapy focuses on the patient’s relationship to themselves and their unconscious, group is a profound experience of better understanding how we function in relation to others. Group generally consists of 7-9 individuals. It is very experiential, and creates the conditions for its participants to access and to study a wide range of feelings aroused by other group members, the leader, and the group itself. Within the group setting, dynamic patterns that first emerged within our families, friendships, workplaces, and romantic relationships appear in the here and now, where they can be articulated, studied, and worked through. Participating in an ongoing group helps us to more fully know our impact on others, as well as helps us to negotiate the impact of others upon us.
Gay Men’s Group (currently in formation)
This is an ongoing group for gay men of all ages who are interested in improving their capacity for relationships and intimacy. Topics for discussion may include, but are not limited to: overcoming shame, building confidence, deepening emotional intelligence, developing trust and vulnerability, enhancing communication styles, aging, transgenerational connection, sex and sexuality, nonmonogamy, porn consumption, and substance use.
The group will meet primarily in person on Thursday mornings, 9:05-10:30am, on 19th Street near Union Square. $60 per session. Initial 12-week commitment required. Previous or current individual therapy experience is helpful but not necessary.
I am currently scheduling initial consultation interviews for the new year. If interested I can be reached at 917-891-0144, or at matthewpieknik@gmail.com.
